Cove Thistle Lift North of Scotland Cup

Woodside 2 – 3 Cove Thistle (AET)

Report by Andy McLaren

Cove Thistle won the North of Scotland Amateur Cup for the second time, and ended Woodside’s hopes of winning a domestic treble, after a nail-biting 3-2 extra time win at Allan Park, Cove.

Cove’s goalkeeper Derek McKenzie should have picked up the man of the match award after some exhilarating saves ensured his sides impressive season continued.

Premier Division leaders Woodside were looking to clinch their first cup of the amateur season, with Joe McGunnigle Snr’s side also still in the Aberdeen FC Trophy and the Association Trophy.

Bryan Forbes’ ferocious left footed strike from 30 yards gave Woodside an early lead in a frenetic first half.

Woodside were in touching distance of making it 2-0 on fifteen minutes when McKenzie had to spread himself well to palm Gabriel’s away a fizzing effort from Brian Neil.

Thistle weathered the early storm and offered a threat when they moved forward as Lee‘s sweeping low drive stung the fingertips of goalkeeper James Thouless before hitting the back of the net to make it 1-1.

Cove went into the lead when Edward Esson hit a rasping 20 yard drive to send the Cove faithful into wild celebrations.

Half-time: 1 – 2

Derek McKenzie again made another breath-taking save to deny Derek Craigie as he somehow tipped the ball onto the post to keep his side’s slender lead intact.

Woodside regained the ascendency as Craigie cannoned a free kick off the unfortunate Lee Gabriel as it was deflected into the net to set up a frantic end to the second half.

Cove were next to scrape the woodwork as Lee Gabriel’s curling free kick crashed against the cross bar as nervous Woodside fans watched on.

As the match entered injury time, Cove’s Derek McKenzie became the heroic figure of the day by making two sensational saves to deny Kristofer Allan and then Brian Neil to force extra time.

Full-Time: 2 – 2

There was still time for Cove supporters to sing the name of their team as McKenzie made another excellent save from a well taken Brian Neil free kick in the first half of extra time.

Cove’s moment of glory finally came when James Fettes at the edge of the Woodside box was put through on goal by Martin Duthie’s inch-perfect pass and he stroked a left-footed curling shot into the far corner to end a thrilling tale to a thrilling match as Cove Thistle lifted the North of Scotland amateur Cup.

After Extra Time: 2 – 3

Man of the Match: Edward Esson
