Mearns United 3 – 4 Cove Thistle

Ian Napier Memorial Shield Final at Glenury Park Stonehaven on Sunday 16th October

Report by Raymond Morrison

What a game for the neutrals in the crowd of around 100 that turned up in perfect conditions.

Cove got off to the perfect start and were up one nil within 90 seconds.

This was followed up on the 10 minute mark with another to give them a commanding start.

Mearns however, managed to get back into the game when they hit the bar from 25yards and were first to react six yards out of the goal.

Half-time: 1-2

Mearns started the livelier in the second half and were soon level.

Worse was to come when the Cove keeper tried to dribble the ball past the Mearns forward and the ball was stolen from him as he lost his footing leaving the forward an open goal and his team a mountain to climb.

Just when you thought the Cove heads would go down they produced a magnificent climax to the game by scoring twice in the last ten minutes to snatch victory.

Full Time: 3-4
