West End 1 – 0 Nicolls Amateurs

1st Touch Football Division One (North) at Hazlehead Academy on Saturday 20th August

Report by Raymond Morrison

The ground staff, Committee and players who arrived early at the venue were confronted with a pitch recently mown with lumps of cut grass left from the previous cut all over the pitch. This was largely cleared by the groundsman, both teams committees and players to the satisfaction of the referee to ensure the game could go ahead.

Both these teams went into this game off back-to-back defeats West End having lost their previous two games to late goals and Nicolls from a heavy defeat to a strong Tarves team.

West End were at full strength whilst Nicolls were missing three or four  players through injury and work including their new signing Graham Ramsay who is their top goal scorer this season so far with five goals. If any of the teams had aspirations of doing well in the league this was a must win game to kick start their season.

Nicolls showed their intention from the start and attacked the West End goal bringing keeper Thomson into action immediately when a point blank shot from Ord was saved and then a header off the bar by Smith saw Nicolls come close.

At the other end Webster had to look lively from an in swinging corner which he punched clear O’Rourke then managed to evade a tackle from Stephen only to see his shot blocked by Mcdonald.

Half-time: 0-0

From the kick off Odonnell won the ball from Camara and his diagonal cross was met on the volley by Ord who saw his shot crashing off the bar from 25 yards.

In the 49th minute Thomson in the West End Goal made a triple save when Ord shot from eight yards the blocked shot came back to Storey and Man of the Match Thomson saved again only for the ball to break to McNamara who shot at the keeper who managed to stretch out his right had to turn the shot for a corner.

With the game looking like there would be no scoring Nicolls were hit by a sucker punch when Dunbar managed to squeeze the ball into the Nicolls net off the inside of the post.
