Cove Thistle Lift the Association Trophy

Cove Thistle 1 – 0 Stoneywood Amateurs

They say lightning does not strike twice in the same place but it did in the final of the Association Cup when Cove scored the winner in the eighty eighth minute from a free kick taken by Paul Gill. The same happened four weeks ago when Cove Thistle’s Joe Gill, brother of Paul, scored the winning goal in the eighty eighth minute giving them the White Cup against tonight’s opponents Stoneywood Amateurs.

Stoneywood’s Middleton was first to test keeper Greig with a shot from twelve yards pushed for a corner by keeper Greig. Five minutes later Middleton had another chance but put his shot past the upright.

Cove settled and started to control the game. Esson was causing havoc with Stoneywood’s defence but his final passes let him down.

Just before the break Stoneywood’s Wilson and Robertson made a move through the middle and Robertson’s shot was saved by keeper Greig at full stretch.

Half-time: 0-0

From the start of the second half Cove had Stoneywood under pressure without success until Cove won a direct free kick in eighty eight minutes twenty yards out. Paul Gill‘s fierce kick hit the back of the net giving Cove their fifth victory over Stoneywood this season.
