Old Aberdonians 1 – 3 Hazlehead Utd

North of Scotland Amateur Cup Fourth Round at Balgownie on Saturday 20th March

Goals from Raymond Massie, Paul Vass and Cameron Smith secured victory for North of Scotland Amateur Cup holders Hazlehead United in this fourth round encounter with Old Aberdonians at Balgownie on Saturday.

Both sides struggled to achieve any early supremacy in the blustery conditions and it was the visitors who broke the deadlock with the first real opening of the game after fifteen minutes when a through ball from Emslie found its way to Massie who accelerated through on goal and finished low past Clark.

Old Aberdonians had the benefit of a strong breeze at their backs as they sought to restore parity and they came close to grabbing an equaliser midway through the opening period when Pocock headed just wide from a Wilson corner. Steven Fraser in the visitors’ goal then produced an instinctive fingertip save to turn a Murison header behind at the expense of a corner and the Premier Division side were denied by the woodwork minutes later when Stewart Fraser dispossessed a defender and cut the ball back to strike partner Marshall who saw his effort rattle the crossbar.

At the other end, the cup holders then came within inches of doubling their advantage just before the interval when a thunderous free-kick from Smith from fully twenty-five yards out came crashing down off the underside of the crossbar onto the line and home keeper Clark then punched the ball to safety under pressure from Emslie.

Half-time: 0-1

The visitors started the second half brightly and increased their lead with a well-crafted goal shortly after the restart when Smith played a perfectly-weighted reverse pass into the path of Vass who supplied a crisp finish from twelve yards out.

Old Aberdonians were finding clear-cut openings to be at a premium as they sought to reduce the leeway and their best effort came when Edwards leapt to meet a dangerous outswinging cross from Roper but his header drifted just past the junction of post and bar.

As the home side continued to press forward in the closing stages, United sought to exploit their lack of numbers at the back and when substitute Macklin was brought down right on the edge of the area, Smith stepped up to curl the resultant free-kick beyond Clark and put the result beyond doubt.

Old Aberdonians did manage to pull a goal back with five minutes remaining when Roper released Marshall wide on the right and his cross was headed home by the unmarked Fraser. However, this was to be no more than a consolation for the hosts and Hazlehead United saw the game out to book their place in Monday evening’s quarter-final draw.
