Charlie Summers, Glendale FC

Charlie Summers passed away at the age of 82, on Friday 13th November 2009.

Charlie was the founding father of Glendale FC in 1972, and took the club through from an Under 18 Youth League juvenile side into the Under 27 District League and finally into the AAFA in 1983.

Charlie was always the mainstay of the club until only a few seasons ago when his health forced him to retire. He still managed to attend the odd game however, and it was fitting that he was there at the end of May when the club secured its first ever League title.

Some years ago Charlie encouraged local lads from the Blairs area to start up a Boys Club which grew into Glendale Boys Club from which a further 2 AAFA clubs have emerged.

A man small in stature but with a personality larger than life he also took a pride in serving for many years as a member of the AAFA Executive Committee.

He will be sadly missed, but all who knew him will remember him fondly.

“If success is portrayed by the amount of trophies that are in your cupboard, then we have not done too well. But if you measure it by the camaraderie, loyalty and affection that has been cemented over the years by this club, then we must be a super club indeed”.
