Midlands AFA Select 3 – 2 Aberdeenshire AFA Select

Aberdeenshire AFA Select team, represented by Premier League Champions Cove Thistle, put up a great display against Midlands in the George Stephen Trophy at Dundee. Two goals down after twenty minutes Aberdeenshire fought back to level the score at half time.

Midlands went ahead in eleven minutes from a cross from the right that was headed past keeper Hopkins by Ryan Tennant. In eighteen minutes Midlands had the ball in the net but the referee disallowed for offside. From a free kick to Aberdeenshire the ball was cleared upfield by Midlands Johnston and Ryan Tennant ran twenty yards unchallenged before striking the ball past the helpless keeper Hopkins.

Keeper Hopkins was in fine form and had to make several crucial saves keeping his team from going further behind. An Aberdeenshire move down the right in forty one minutes saw the ball crossed to the far post where Craig Strachan‘s diving header flew into the net. Two minutes later Aberdeenshire were level when Craig Strachan pounced on a ball and fired his shot into the net.

In the second half the play flowed from end to end both teams making chances but could not get the vital goal. Deep into added time a mix up in Aberdeenshire’s defence let Midlands John Innes slip the ball past keeper Hopkins to make the final score 3-2. Keeper Hopkins was awarded the man of the match award for his excellent goalkeeping.
