Echt 1 – 2 Eddlewood

Fosters Centenary Scottish Amateur Cup Sixth Round at Echt on Saturday 21st February

Echt’s first half performance let them down in the sixth round of the Scottish Amateur Cup letting Eddlewood into the next round by the odd goal out of three.

Echt had not played a competitive game for the last four weeks and started today’s game on a very heavy pitch. Eddlewood, the Cup holders, kicked off down the slope and had Echt’s defence in trouble when McCluskley ran down the left and crossed to Kerr whose shot was blocked by Echt’s Stewart. It was all Eddlewood and they won three corners in as many minutes but could not convert any of them. Echt’s keeper Garden had to look lively when he made a diving save from Lister.

After twenty minutes of constant pressure Eddlewood finally went ahead when from a corner on the left the ball was sent to the far post where Lister fired in an unstoppable shot. Echt were unlucky when a breakaway by Murray saw his shot go past the post. Echt made another chance when Presslie passed to Paterson in front of goal but his shot went over the bar. Just before half time Eddlewood’s McCluskey’s fierce shot was pushed over the bar by keeper Garden at full stretch.

Half-time: 0-1

The second half started with Eddlewood’s Gray through on goal but keeper Garden made a great save at Gray’s feet. In fifty minutes Echt’s Thomson pulled down Eddlewood’s Gray in the box and referee Brand pointed to the spot. McGurk placed the ball on the spot, sent the ball to keeper Garden’s left side where the keeper managed to get a hand to it and push it out only to Lister who blasted the ball into the net.

From then on it was a different Echt team. They started winning balls in midfield, finding their men with sharp passing and making chances. In a breakaway by Eddlewood Echt’s keeper showed his class again when with a one on one with McCluskey the keeper again saved at his opponent’s feet. Echt were pushing forward in numbers and Mcleod had a shot from ten yards out that soared over the bar. In seventy five minutes Echt’s Daun pulled a goal back when, from a free kick, he was allowed to turn in the box and put the ball past the keeper.

The last fifteen minutes had Eddlewood pinned back in their own half scrambling the ball clear at times but they managed to keep the full time score 1-2.
