Nicolls Amateurs 3 – 3 University

Soccer World Premier Division at Denmore on Saturday 8th November

A last-gasp Callum Lamont strike denied Nicolls their first league win of the season in this Premier Division clash at Denmore.

Lamont netted a minute into stoppage time, just two minutes after Dave Askew appeared to have sealed the points for the home side in an entertaining encounter.

The students opened the scoring after just seven minutes when the Nicolls defence only have cleared the ball as far as David Battles 18 yards out, and he rifled a low shot past Lawson.

Jason Bell came close to doubling Uni’s lead with a scissor-kick, but bottom-of-the-table Nicolls levelled with their first real chance of the afternoon on 25 minutes. Lawson’s long kick out wasn’t dealt with by the Uni defence, and Askew nipped in to lob Craig Stephen with a cute finish from the edge of the box.

The home side took the lead seven minutes later after Graeme Skene won a free-kick 25 yards out on the left corner of the box. And while Stephen was still trying to arrange his wall, the Nicolls striker caught the Uni keeper by surprise by curling the ball into the top right corner.

Nicolls came close to adding to their lead six minutes before the break when Paul O’Donnell’s cross came back off Stephen’s right post.

Half-time: 2-1

Uni started the second half on the offensive, and the visitors spurned a great chance to pull level when Lawson spilled Lamont’s strike, but there were no attackers to take advantage of the keeper’s error.

Uni’s pressure finally paid off as they equalised just six minutes from time. A rare Nicolls attack won them a corner, which was cleared as far as goalscorer Askew. He played a slack ball back for defender Martin Johnston, which substitute Jamie Allan latched on to. The Uni attacker was clean through on Lawson and coolly slotted past the exposed Nicolls No.1.

That wasn’t the end of the scoring, though as the home side came to life in an attacking sense. Eager to make up for his mistake, Askew broke forward on the left, cut inside and was tripped inside the penalty area. Askew brushed himself down to slot the penalty past Stephen with just 30 seconds of normal time remaining.

Uni launched a late attempt to snatch a draw, and they did exactly that after more slack defending from the home side, who failed to deal with a long throw from the left. The ball broke loose to Lamont, who adjusted his body superbly to fire a low shot past Lawson to dramatically seal a deserved point for the students.
