1st Touch Football Division Three at Tullos on Saturday 12th May

Report by Scott McPherson

Amateur new boys Dee continued their onslaught on the Division Three title with a hard-fought victory over a stubborn Broomhill side.

Broomhill’s early lead given to them by Niall Benzahia was cancelled out by goals from Dee’s front two. Ryan Hall equalised in the first-half before Kieran Will scored a free kick after the interval. The scoring was rounded off by Hall again to secure another three points for Dee.

An uneventful first quarter was sparked into life by a surprise Broomhill BC goal. Broomhill lone-striker John MacDonald chipped a delightful ball in-between defence and ‘keeper for midfield runner Niall Benzahia who beat Dee goalkeeper Steven Ross to the ball to stab into the empty net.

Dee stepped up their game after Broomhill’s goal and eventually equalised 10 minutes later with a goal out of nothing. The ball bounced 25 yards from goal and Dee’s striker Ryan Hall swivelled before striking the ball across the ‘keeper into the side netting giving Danny Matthews no chance in goal for Broomhill.

Dee continued to press after their equaliser but it was the away side who threatened next. Broomhill hit their hosts on the counter and an exchange by Nazim Djemba and Benzahia gave Captain John MacDonald time and space in the box but his shot was deflected by opposite Captain Ryan Davidson and the ball spun towards the back post before being kicked off the line.

Shortly before half-time Dee should have taken the lead for the first time. Great work from right back Terry Duthart on the wing saw him put in a deep cross to left winger Martin Wood who harmlessly headed it over despite having time and space.

Half-time: 1 – 1

Dee made their intentions clear from the very start of the half. Striker Kieran Will shot directly from kick-off and Matthews could only tip over to give Dee a very early corner after the interval.

It wasn’t long before Dee were in front. Striker Ryan Hall was a constant threat with his pace and directness and it was he who won the free kick for their second, scissored down on the edge of the box. His strike partner Kieran Will stepped up and smashed the ball high into the net for their 110th goal in the league this season. The ball was past ‘keeper Matthews before he could even react.

The turning point of the game came almost immediately after that goal. Dee skipper Ryan Davidson miskicked a clearance and the ball fell into the empty space behind him. Struggling Broomhill John MacDonald shrugged off his injury to sprint towards the ball and float the ball over the on rushing Steven Ross but Davidson got back in time to atone for his initial error and clear off the line.

MacDonald was forced off with an ankle injury shortly after his chance. This left Broomhill with 10 men as they had no substitutes to replace him with. That miss seemed even more significant as 10 men Broomhill wouldn’t create many more.

An inevitable third for Dee Amateurs came 20 minutes from time. Striker Kieran Will shot direct from a free kick from all of 30 yards which was tamely spilled by ‘keeper Matthews into the path of Ryan Hall who beat his own teammate Liam Cowe to the ball.

Throughout the match a spate of yellow cards were shown and those eventually turned into a red just before full-time. Dee midfielder Brett Aitken was fouled in the middle of the park but the referee gave advantage and Aitken lost his cool and dived in two footed towards Jamie Dryburgh. Aitken had already been booked but was given a straight red card anyway, showing how poor the tackle was. A disappointing ending to a competitive match.

Full Time: 1 – 3

1st Touch Football Division Three at Newburgh on Saturday 12th May

Report by Andy McLaren

Newburgh Thistle manager Jamie Clark could not hide his delight after his side achieved promotion to Division Two, despite crashing to a 4-1 defeat by Huntly Amateurs in their last game of the season.

Clark believes his teams promotion triumph deserves “massive praise”, after the club merged with neighbours Parkway Thistle in only their first amateur season together.

He said: “The two teams have gelled together well with a good mix of pace and strength throughout the squad. Work commitments mean we have found it hard to keep a stable starting eleven, so to gain promotion is something special.”

Thistle chairman Ian Alexander expects the club to go from “strength to strength” next season. He said: “We now have full backing and funding in place to commence with the building of new changing facilities, which will give the players an added incentive to do the club proud next season. “It’s an exciting time for the lads but we know next season will be an even tougher test.”

Huntly’s Ben Myers was the man of the match after his hat-trick continued his side’s impressive run towards the end of the season in a pulsating clash of two Aberdeenshire rivals.

It was the prolific Myers who grabbed an early goal after he slotted the ball in off the bar from a well weighted Owen Mitchell pass.

The partnership of Myers and John Robertson caused the Newburgh defence problems throughout the match with their quick, one touch passing that almost resulted in a Thistle own goal after Leslie Duncan’s last ditch challenge brushed the post before going out for a corner.

Huntly goalkeeper Charles Wood had to be alert as he foiled Greg Matthew and Jamie Lobban with two excellent saves before Garry Finnie missed a glorious opportunity from only ten yards.

Huntly’s second goal also came from Myers once more as he curled a swooping free kick past the unfortunate Kyle Eaglesfield who could only parry it into the side of the net.

Newburgh’s day went from bad to worse as their captain, Steven Sinclair was awarded a red card after an off the ball incident with Huntly’s Ben Myers.

The resulting free kick was brilliantly executed by Shaun Nichol who rifled the ball in off the post to cap an excellent half from his side.

Half-time: 0 – 3

The visitors were sharp throughout, zipping passes neatly around the surface and always looked the more likely to score.

Newburgh’s Gavin Law fired a good chance over while Ian Barron fluffed an even better chance from close range when he misjudged a header from Richard Hyland’s cross.

On 65 minutes, Garry Finnie wriggled free down the right flank to reach the by-line, picking out Scott Cruickshank to side foot it past Charles Wood to reduce the deficit.

However, Huntly were quick to respond as Ben Myers rounded of an impressive display by thumping a penalty past Kyle Eaglesfield to secure his hat-trick and all three points.

Full Time: 1 – 4

1st Touch Football Division Two (East) at Aulton on Saturday 5th May

Report by Scott McPherson

Mugiemoss Youth continued their losing run with a disastrous start to the game which left them with a mountain to climb against mid-table Torphins. Goals from Cruickshank, Travers and Brow within the first 5 minutes left Division Two (East) strugglers Mugiemoss facing another heavy defeat.

Torphins wide man Keith Allardyce started quickest and was the outstanding player of the first 5 minutes. It’s hard to award someone a Man of the Match award for a 5 minute spell but Allardyce’s sharp start earned his side the victory.

It was Allardyce who created the opening goal just a few minutes in. His volley from the right angle of the 18 yard box went across goal but was cleared off the line by Muggiemoss captain Andrew McKenzie. His clearance only found midfielder David Cruickshank six yards out used his knee to lift the ball over McKenzie into the top corner.

Almost directly from the kick off Torphins doubled their lead. A long free kick from inside their own half was met by Steven Travers 12 yards out. ‘Moss goalkeeper Craig Laing gave a big ‘keepers shout but Travers beat him to the ball to prod past him.

5 minutes in it was 0-3 Torphins. Youth defender Lewis Crawford lost a 50/50 in the middle of the park and the ball was played into the space he vacated for striker Robert Brow who was nearly stopped by a last ditch tackle from full back John McKenzie, but he managed to shrug him off and slot past Laing inside the 18 yard box.

It could have been worse for Mugiemoss minutes later as Torphins really should have made it four. Allardyce broke through on the right again and pulled the ball back to striker Paul Gilbert who, with plenty of space, could only stab wide from six yards out.

As the half went on Mugiemoss stabilised and the Torphins pressure subsided although they continued to create chances against an unorganised ‘Moss defence. Striker Robert Brow galloped through the Mugiemoss back four to go one-on-one with Laing before very unselfishly squaring the ball to strike partner Gilbert which gave midfielder Scott Watson time to get a block in. The Mugiemoss defence were left claiming for offside despite Brow being in his own half when the ball was played.

Torphins were creating chances from everywhere, even directly from a goal kick which put Brow through again but his half volley blasted over the bar from the edge of the 18 yard box.

Half-time: 0 – 3

The Mugiemoss players seemed quite content to only be there down at half-time after their dreadful start, seeking a better a performance after the interval with the wind behind them. Unfortunately for Mugiemoss that never materialised.

Torphins also could not recapture their first half form which produced an uneventful second half. Both Torphins’ strikers Brow and Gilbert put half chances wide and over respectively.

The closest anyone came to a second half goal was 10 minutes from time. A Torphins corner was flicked on by Steven Travers and his header was cleared off the line by Mugiemoss substitute Liam Spencer.

The home side only achieved two shots on target the whole game, both trickling comfortably towards the goalkeeper.

Full Time: 0 – 3
